The Land of Wooden Furniture

...and airports.

Actually, my only experience in Denmark was the Copenhagen airport. Since this was a purely hedonistic trip for me, I decided not to buy any postcards in Sweden and spend my time writing to people and trying to find a post office, but I would buy a postcard during my long layovers in Copenhagen--and not send them to anyone.

The thing that blew me away, especially after months in Poland, was the way shops were designed to be pretty and appeal to me, and how shop people were trying to be nice to me to get me to buy things--rather than treat me as if I were asking them a favor to let me be in their shop.

The central portion of the Copenhagen airport is made almost entirely of wood. Wooden floors, wooden railings, wooden walls, and all of it beautifully carved in a modern style. It reminds me why my parents liked Danish modern furniture. Of course, I could also buy a recent paperback in English. However, prices were much like in Sweden. USD 5 for a slice of Pizza Hut pizza, and my book was about USD 18. Paperback, mind you. Still, it was hedonism, and I heeded.

Even the outside of the airport, as seen from the ramp, was nicely designed--unpretentious, unlike the Frankfurt airport. So if you're a Dane and are reading this, congratulate yourself on violating Douglas Adam's stricture that no one could ever come up with the phrase, "pretty as an airport." He just needs some perspective.
