White Rap?Was is das, meine home-boy? Das ist eine sick development in music, in my not-so-humble opinion. It may spell the death knell for rap, just as going into academia spelled the E-N-D for Jazz. "White Rap" is rap listened to primarily by white people. These tend to be affluent college kids from suburbia who want to think they're Understanding Black Rage. What they're understanding is how to assuage their consciences without actually having to come into contact with a real, live black person. All the hip little kiddies dressed in uniforms of black with goatees and dreadlocks (and the guys don't look so hot, either), presumably to show their individuality by submerging themselves in the trendy collective, play their Radical and Dangerous music on Alternative Stations. Wheeee! Let's subvert the dominant paradigm by listening to Corporate Rap put out by those Philosophical Left-Wing Radicals at...Warner Brothers? Sony? RCA? You gotta be kiddin' me. Does this mean that white people can't enjoy rap? Of course not. But if you're going to listen to rap, don't listen to the Corporate Rage, OK? Scaring yourself by openly admitting your Fear of a Black Planet will not bring about racial harmony. Racial harmony is not bought at the record store. It's constructed through hard work of molding your everyday relations with your friends of whatever color. It won't happen tomorrow, or the next day. It won't be legislated into existence, nor will mass seances cure our woes. It's hard, individual, personal work. |
